Importance of speaking up: breaking the silence

Why speak up?

Are you an outcast?

South Asian Women Speaking Up About Being Independent

South Asian women starting to speak up

One of our volunteers submitted the following videos:

It is normally one bad apple in the family, you must have the courage to call that person out.

These videos sound incomprehensible and horrific by humanitarian standards. Assumption that all South Asian men treat their women badly is not correct. Every culture has some good and some bad people. Truth, justice and respect are everyone’s’ rights. No man or a person should be allowed to inflict any bodily harm to a woman or child under any circumstances.

“I left home at age 19 with $50 in my back pack and ended up staying at a shelter with very little language skills, no money and no direction. Once a South Asian Woman steps out of her family’s home, she become an outcast. Never to be loved again, supported emotionally or financially and used as an example of a person without character. Nobody ever tries to find out, why did she leave in the first place? She cannot change others, but she can start change with herself. NEVER AGAIN. Her mother, her sister, her daughter or she would be treated badly, killed, abused, or controlled. Life is a beautiful gift and she does have a choice to make it abuse free, safe and filled with love. It is a very lonely journey. Getting support from men can place a woman in compromising situations. Thank you SAWNTV for creating the space for women like me to get support and guidance with cultural context.”-Anonymous submission of video & text
